On Saturday, October 19th six of the English teachers attended the Alabama Council of Teachers of English State Convention at the Hoover Freshman Academy. We attended various workshops from teaching reading and writing to using technology in the classroom and differentiating instruction. The keynote speaker was Carol Jago, author of the book Papers, Papers, Papers. As a department, we did a book study on her book last year. Meeting her in person was a great experience that validated the practices we were using from her book. We had lunch with Alabama author Watt Key who entertained us with his humorous and boisterous stories. It was a day of learning and camaraderie.
November 15th-18th five of the English department will be attend the National Council of Teachers of English National Convention in New York City. This is the first time that we will be attending a national convention. We hope to bring back a plethora of ideas and strategies to share with all of our colleagues.
