The OMS and OHS choirs competed at State Festival on Wednesday with wonderful results!

The OMS and OHS Women's choirs received excellent ratings, while the OMS Mixed Choir,
the OHS Mixed Choir, and the OHS Men's Choir received superior ratings!

Also, following the State Ensemble competition 2 weeks before, of 12 ensembles from OMS and OHS, 2 received excellent ratings and 10 received superior ratings!

Choir students have done a wonderful job this year - Congratulations!!!!

The OHS FIRST Robotics competed in their initial competition at the FIRST Peachtree Regional March 4th - 6th. This was the Rookie year for our team, Oxford Omega. The team was selected to compete as part of one of the last 8 Alliances that went on to the Quarter Finals. Oxford Omega and their Alliance teammates made it to the Finals with impressive wins in two quarter final and one semifinal match. However, after having a one win lead in the Finals, due to an unfortunate mechanical failure with our robot and then with mechanical failures suffered by our teammates, we came in second place. Oxford Omega did a fantastic job in their first year of competition.

OHS Class Flag Collection

For many years the classes of Oxford High School would have a flag made in honor of their year of graduation. These flags were waved during pep rallies by the classmates of the classes. This was a tradition that seemed to have started with the class of 1978 and carried on until 2000.

At times, flags have been borrowed for class reunions. There are several years' flags that are missing from the collection. If you have one of these flags or know of one of the missing flags, please contact the office. We are planning to display the flags in the new Oxford High School and would like to retrieve all the missing flags so the collection can be complete. We also are hoping to bring back this tradition with the Class of 2010.

Oxford High School choir had six students auditioning for the Alabama All-State Choir recently. Of those six, Connor McCall was selected to be a member this year. There were over 600 students from across Alabama that auditioned for this group, and only 60 were chosen.

The OHS choirs competed in the Smoky Mountain Music Festival and achieved great results!

A new education environment: Oxford High's new Freshman Academy opens

OXFORD — Amanda Parker's eyes widened the moment she stepped into Oxford High's Freshman Academy on Wednesday.

Not because of the state-of-the-art computer and science labs, the Mozart emanating from the speakers or the ample space to stroll the hallways without feeling smooshed.

It was the smell.

"New fresh paint," the 15-year-old said. "Fresh building material."

Such scents — along with the aforementioned amenities — are a far cry from what she and roughly 325 other freshmen are used to.

Before the new $6.15 million academy opened Wednesday, the freshmen used dingy lockers marked with random scribble, frequently bumped into fellow students walking to class and grew sick of having to climb a flight of stairs to the only bathrooms — problems wrought by a 50-year-old building.

Now they can breathe — and learn — a little easier.

"It's more high-tech," said Whitney Henson, 15, citing the digital white boards in each classroom.
The academy, said Marty Livingston, Oxford High assistant principal and administrator of the academy, is a school within a school, totally isolating freshmen from upperclassmen and built to help middle-schoolers transition to high school.

"All stumbling blocks — as many as possible — are removed through the Freshman Academy," he said. "Ninth grade is a make-or-break year."

National studies have found the rate at which students leave school after ninth grade has nearly tripled in the last 30 years. Oxford leaders hope the extra attention on freshmen will help address high dropout rates.

The freshmen don't seem to mind being away from everyone else.

"You feel safer," Henson said, adding the separation "keeps you away from peer pressure."

"You can't get made fun of for being a freshman," said Madison Thomas, 14.

"And it's getting us ready for the high school," said Alexis Baxter, the 15-year-old freshman class president.

Barely audible classical music also plays constantly at the academy. Livingston said studies show that students test better and cause less disciplinary problems under the "Mozart effect."

"Every now and then they get up and do ballet," he quipped.

The University of Alabama is going to require the Writing component of the ACT beginning with the summer and fall 2010 entering freshmen. In addition, for these students, there will be no paper application packet; application will be made online. See Ms. Knight if you have any questions.

Yearbook needs BEST FRIENDS pictures - one picture from when you first became friends and one present picture - deadline is Jan. 9 - turn in to Mrs. Wilson, room 301.

JUNIORS: Student Leaders in Service is a week-long residential program for students who will be seniors in the 2009-2010 academic school year, sponsored by Birmingham Southern College. The Program exposes juniors to leadership theories and provides opportunities to practice leadership through community service, while also giving them a taste of college life. The Program will include the following activities. Eligible students must have a 2.25 or higher GPA and a 21 ACT or 980 SAT to be accepted. The cost is $450 for food, lodging, entertainment, transportation, and reading materials. If you are interested, see Ms. Knight

The Oxford Student Council attended the District VI Student Council Association Workshop on November 12, 2008, at Jacksonville State University. Those attending the workshop were
Jessie Baldwin, president, Judd Edwards, vice president, Melissa Lovvern, secretary, Allison Norby, treasurer, and Mrs. Linda Rogers, SCA Sponsor. Students attended leadership seminars and participated in a mock forum by the JSU freshmen student government officers. Lunch was provided and a DJ entertained the students before and after lunch while students mingled with other District VI representatives. Congressman Mike Rogers gave closing remarks and graciously posed for a photo with the Oxford SCA at the end of the session.

Oxford's Pilkington, Edwards ink baseball scholarships

OXFORD — Oxford High School seniors Trey Pilkington and Judd Edwards were both dipped in their Sunday best as they each signed Division I baseball scholarships at a ceremony held at the school's media center on Wednesday, the first day of NCAA's early signing.

Pilkington (a 6-foot-4, 210-pound pitcher) signed with the University of Alabama, while Edwards (a 5-11 shortstop) signed with Louisiana-Monroe of the Sun Belt Conference.
Pilkington sported a red-and-white, pinstripe shirt accompanied by a platinum tie — dotted with "As" — while Edwards sported a long-sleeved, white button-up and a tie to match the school he signed with.

Both players said signing early would take a lot of pressure off of them to perform and free them up to just go out and have fun as they prepare for their senior seasons.

Pilkington became the second player from Calhoun County in the past two seasons to sign with a Souththeastern Conference school after former Saks catcher Caleb Bowen went to Auburn.
Pilkington's decision to go to Alabama was essentially a no-brainer, though the lifelong Crimson Tide fan toyed with offers from LSU, Mississippi State and Auburn.

"I felt like it was the place that was home for me," said Pilkington after he and Edwards posed for pictures for nearly 15 minutes in a room spilling over with coaches, teammates, family, friends and various other well-wishers.

"I loved Mississippi State and LSU, but I liked Alabama that much more," he added.
Pilkington went 6-3 as Oxford's ace this past season to go along with 48 strikeouts, and his fastball now peaks at anywhere from 92-94 MPH. It was only topping out at 82-83 as a sophomore, but he put in the necessary work to mold himself into a big-time college prospect with a shot at the pros.

Oxford coach Wes Brooks said Pilkington has worked diligently to become the player he is today, employing a training regimen that utilizes a combination of medicine ball drills, arm band drills and throwing sand balls that weigh as much as a pound more than a baseball — all to build arm strength.

Pilkington also used what Brooks referred to as a "prehab" workout, which employs the same tactics that a rehab program would to restore a pitcher's arm after an injury to condition it before they begin throwing.

"We'd have 10 guys in there doing the program, and he'd be in there sweating the whole time," Brooks said. "As a 10th grader, he only threw 80 but wanted to throw 90 and had the work ethic and the drive to do it."

Brooks compared Pilkington's willingness to pay the cost to be the boss to that of former Oxford and current Jacksonville State standout Ben Tootle.
Tootle threw in the mid-80s while he was a Yellow Jacket, but has been a clocked at 100-plus MPH in summer league and is destined to be a first-round choice in the Major League Baseball Draft this spring.

"I didn't think I'd be getting what I got," said Pilkington, who has heard from the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins. He added that he didn't know at the time if he'd entertain any offers from professional teams.

Edwards chose Louisiana-Monroe over offers from Auburn, UAB, Memphis and the College of Charleston.

Edwards played summer ball for the Alabama Bombers two years ago where he ran into then-Memphis assistant Cory Barton, and the two stayed in contact with one another.
Barton, now an assistant at Louisiana-Monroe, linked up with Edwards again at a tournament this past summer where Edwards was playing with the Excel Baseball Academy team out of Oxford.

"They gave me a call. I went out there for a visit. They offered me a scholarship and I committed the following week," said Edwards, referring to the mid-September events.

"It (Monroe, La.) was a big city with a small -town feel and I loved that," Edwards said. "It's a top-of-the-line school. I'll have a chance to play early for a school that won a conference championship last season. What more could I ask for in a baseball school?"

Edwards was just they type of player and person the Warhawks, who went 34-28 last season, were looking to add to their program, according to Barton.

"It's just his attitude, the way he carries himself on and off the field," Barton said. "He's a hard-nosed competitor. Offensively, he runs well. He hits for average, and we think he'll be able to hit for power down the road once he focuses solely on baseball."

Edwards started at quarterback for Oxford in 2008, leading the Yellow Jackets to an 8-3 record. He completed 134 of 261 passes for 2,009 yards and 15 touchdowns, with only five interceptions. He also rushed for 636 yards on 81 carries.

Edwards completed 22 of 26 passing attempts for 298 yards and two touchdowns and added 103 yards and another touchdown on the ground as he racked up 405 yards of total offense in the Yellow Jackets' season-ending, 48-45 loss to Bob Jones in the first round of the state football playoffs last week.

He said he'd received interest from Eastern Kentucky, Army and Navy among others to play football.

"Him playing football really tells you about what kind of athlete he is, and that type of ability he has that he could play both sports against good competition in Alabama at a high level," Barton said.

Students Attend Leadership Conference

Three students from OHS recently attended Troy University’s Freshman Forum Leadership Conference. The Freshman Forum believes that when students come together and share ideas and ambitions, the possibilities are endless. The goal of this conference is to enhance the leadership abilities of high school students.

The conference offered workshops on leadership, parliamentary procedure, as well as fun games and exercises. After encouraging words from Troy University President, Dr. Jack Hawkins, the students enjoyed a special leadership presentation showcasing some of the most outstanding leaders on the Troy campus.

The three seniors from Oxford attending included: Jessi Baldwin, Melissa Lovvorn, and Alison Norby. These students enjoyed learning the true meaning of leadership, how to conduct a meeting, and getting to know other students from around the state. These three active leaders at OHS plan to further their education at UAB, The University of Alabama, and Auburn University. All three plan to major in Education.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: Teachers, we have received information about an award for students who have made a difference in our community by volunteering their service during the past year. Any student can enter by going online and completing the application. Please mention this to your students and if any are interested in applying for the award they can follow the directions below. There are school winners, then state winners, then national winners. They can win from $1000 to $5000 dollars, medallions, trophies, and a trip to Washington DC. All the information can be found on their web-site.
Visit www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential , click on the application link, and follow the on-screen instructions. When asked for the access key, type the word “spirit”. If they don’t have internet access, they can call 1-877-525-8491 to get a paper application form.

Students need to be sure that they can prove the required number of hours that they have given through volunteer service. We will have a local winner, and two runners-up (if we have the applicants).

JUNIORS: Student Leaders in Service is a week-long residential program for students who will be seniors in the 2009-2010 academic school year, sponsored by Birmingham Southern College. The Program exposes juniors to leadership theories and provides opportunities to practice leadership through community service, while also giving them a taste of college life. The Program will include the following activities. Eligible students must have a 2.25 or higher GPA and a 21 ACT or 980 SAT to be accepted. Oxford Volleyball Dominates

OXFORD — Oxford utterly dominated the competition from start to finish Tuesday afternoon on its way to an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A, Area 13 tournament title.
The top-seeded Yellow Jackets defeated Pell City in the semifinals and Hewitt-Trussville in the final, winning both matches 3-0, to finish the season undefeated against area foes. They dropped the Panthers 25-9, 25-14, 25-15, then disposed of the Huskies 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 on the way to the championship.

The performance, though impressive, certainly wasn't anything out of the ordinary for the Yellow Jackets, who improved their record to 43-6 on the season with the victories. Aside from the final game of the title match, which saw the Yellow Jackets lead — which once ballooned to as much as nine — dwindle down to two at 21-19, Oxford was almost immaculate.
"We played well as a team,," Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin said. "The more we played the better we got."

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first game against Pell City en route to a 25-9 win which set the tone for the rest of the tournament. The Yellow Jackets bumped, set and dug their way to a 7-0 lead in the second game, winning 25-14. They put the Panthers away by winning 18 of the last 29 points after leading 7-4 early.

"We do that a lot," said McKibbin, referring to her team's hot.

Nothing changed for Oxford in the final against Hewitt-Trussville.

The Yellow Jackets won the last nine points in Game 1. In Game 2, they used a 6-0 run to create a 10-point gap between them and the Huskies at 15-5 before winning 25-9. Hewitt made a push in the third game, chiseling the lead to three points on two occasions and two once before Quinita Jackson's kill at 24-20 ended the game and the match emphatically.

Outside hitter Allison Schwyn led the way for the Yellow Jackets in the final with 10 kills and 10 digs. Jordan McCall filled out the stat sheet with six kills, eight digs, five blocks, 15 assists and an ace. Jackson had six kills and a block and setter Brittany Middlebrook added 15 digs. "We know we can play well." said Schwyn, who hounded the Huskies with powerful shots from the left side. "We know we can dominate if we play our best but it's good that we had to fight hard at the end to get the win and earn it."

The Yellow Jackets will face Area 16 runners-up and 2007 state finalist Grissom in the Region D tournament at 11:15 a.m. Saturday morning at Area 16 winner Huntsville High School. Grissom is ranked third in the state. Hewitt-Trussville will take on Huntsville, winners of six consecutive (two in 6A and four in 5A) state championships in the Region D tournament opener at 10 a.m.
Lena Abdoli paced Hewitt with seven kills and five digs. Katie Taylor had six kills. Lauren Bedford had 11 digs and Laura Hawkins contributed with a kill, a block seven digs and 15 assists.

Great Weekend for the Jackets

It was a great start to the season for both the football team and cross country teams. The Jackets won a hard fought battle at Benjamin Russell, and the cross country team had a great showing at the American Christian Academy Trail Run in Tuscaloosa, AL. The boy's team finished first while the girl's team finished second.

We also had a great show from our band and cheerleaders, and a great crowd at the game. Great Job Jackets!
